What Is a MEWP?
MEWP stands for Mobile Elevating Work Platform. It is the umbrella term for machines that lift a person up to work at height, then bring them safely back down. If your team uses scissor lifts or boom lifts on site, they are operating MEWPs.
There are two machine types most operators come across. Scissor lifts raise the platform straight up and down, which suits jobs like warehouse racking, maintenance, and stocktaking. Boom lifts, sometimes called cherry pickers, reach up and out over obstacles, which makes them useful for tree work, building repairs, and awkward access points.
Each machine handles differently, so operators need the right boom and scissor lift training for the equipment they will actually use.
Why MEWP Training Matters
A MEWP can lift a worker many metres off the ground. A small mistake, a poorly checked machine, or an operator who has not been trained properly can lead to a serious fall or a tip-over. These accidents are almost always preventable.
Good training does more than teach someone which levers to pull. It covers pre-use inspections, safe positioning, ground conditions, and what to do in an emergency. Our Training and the IPAF Standard
Much of the MEWP training in the UK and Ireland is delivered through IPAF, the International Powered Access Federation, a global not-for-profit group that promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment. Operators who complete an IPAF course receive a PAL Card, short for Powered Access Licence, valid for five years.
We do not issue IPAF PAL Cards. Our courses follow the IPAF training guide closely, covering the same machine categories, the same practical assessment, and the same safety standards. Operators are trained and tested on the equipment they will actually use:
- 3a (Mobile Vertical): scissor lifts and similar platforms that raise the operator straight up, suited to warehouse racking, maintenance, and stocktaking.
- 3b (Mobile Boom): boom lifts and cherry pickers that reach up and out over obstacles, useful for tree work, building repairs, and awkward access points.
What operators receive instead is a CertPal certificate, and that is where our system does more than a card in a wallet.
What MEWP Training Leads To
The goal of any MEWP course is simple: an operator who can work at height safely and hold a recognised qualification to prove it. Training combines theory with practical assessment, and operators are tested on the specific machine category they will use.
For scissor lifts, that means the 3a category. For boom lifts and cherry pickers, it means 3b. An operator can be trained and assessed on one category or both, depending on the equipment they work with. Once they pass, the category is recorded on their PAL Card, so a supervisor can see at a glance which machines each person is cleared to operate.
